Getting Laid Off SUCKS!!!!!
Getting laid off Sucks.......................BIG TIME!!!
It really messes with you in so many ways and sadly its become common place within this profession we LOVE so much, animation.
There aren't any words that can help and those words of encouragement aren't much help either but what you need to remember is this: It's NOT personal (even though it feels that way), your not alone, it happens to everyone and you will get through it.
Here are just a few thoughts that have helped me get through the tough times of looking for a new JOB.
1. Be Ready
As an Animator you should ALWAYS have copies of your work and this should become part of your work flow. When you finish a shot/animation and you like it make a playblast/movie and bring it home!! You should be adding examples of your work all the time and NOT waiting till the last minute. Its like saving money, you don't save when you need the money you save when you DON'T need the money. Same principle here, if that day should come, hopefully NOT ever but if it does you will be ready and not freaking out, scrambling to get copies of your work.
For Animators and Artists use Vimeo, YouTube, Artstation – these are the sites you should use for your reels. Why? Because your personal websites are unreliable and often difficult to navigate, have broken links, outdated links, some plugin don’t work, etc etc etc.
2. Be Cool
Layoffs are stressful for EVERYONE including those who are not let go. My advice is simply this "BE COOL" and try not to get emotional. Stay strong and be there for one another and remember we are all in this together.
Once you know you've lost your job all you want to do is get out ASAP, I get it!! Just do yourself the favor and listen to what HR (Human Resources) has to say. You may not want to hear it, but trust me when I say this, you will be happy you did listen I promise! The information is very important and often very helpful so please be cool and listen.
4. Stay connected
Your friends and colleagues can be life savers and knowing someone in a studio can give you the edge you need. So always be growing your network and be adding new contacts, people you truly are friends with. Do not add people you barely know, only add those individuals you know personally and have worked closely with.
5. Know where to look for job(s)
This may sound simple and easy but you'd be surprised, especially for those who have been in their job for a while. Below are some good places to look:
***Always go and look on a studio/companies website too.
6. No trash talking
If you have nothing good to say then say nothing! No one ever looked good speaking bad about someone and once you land in your new job you'll most likely look back with fond memories. Don't let this one thing ruin years of good. Oh and STAY OFF SOCIAL MEDIA, it can only get you in trouble!!!
7. The world does not stop spinning
Pick yourself up and get going, your new job at this point is to find a new job. Remember the world has not stopped spinning because you got laid off so dust yourself off and stand proud. Start planning, organizing and thinking about what's next. and know you will land on your feet.
Like I said I get it and getting laid off is awful, one of the worst things that can happen but you will get through this trust me!
