Oil & Acrylic on Canvas
One of my earliest paintings that is so near and dear to me, definitely one of my favorites.
Like most of my painting I usually have no plan once the composition has been created. I know what I'm painting but have no idea what colors I'm going to use or a vision of what it will look like in the end. It's an odd and scary (the unknown) time but also exciting because I can't wait to see where the paint takes me.
In this particular piece I wanted to describe the horses and their bodies without having to actually paint the horse(s) themselves. I started by painting the jockey's first and one of the horses then I stopped and staring at the painting for days. I realized the jockey's were describing the horse(s) with how they sat on them. I then used negative space and the colors already on the canvas to describe the horses further.
The painting simply came together like straight ahead animation.... Basically letting the painting tell the artist where to go next.
